Acne is a disorder of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, the glands the secrete sweat on your skin. As you may already know, they occur during adolescence in both men and women, and it tends to get worse in people with oily skin. It is very common on the face, but can also appear on the neck, back, and arms and legs. It is a myth that acne is due to a bad oily diet or poor hygiene, it is purely due to overactive hormones or bad genes passed along the family tree.

An acne starts off being a comedo, an enlarged hair follicle that is infected with bacteria and oil from the skin. The amount of bacteria growing within the comedo is proportional to the amount of oil that is produced from the skin. So you should already know that keeping your skin moist but not very oily is a smart idea to prevent breaking out with acne. Eventually, the skin around the comedo becomes inflamed due to the human immune response against this infected spot, and a baby acne is formed! You can get either an inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne as explained below.

Inflammatory acne:

Pustules:
These are tiny round spots that are obviously inflamed and contain pus (white blood cells). At the base it appears reddish, and it has a white center. These are normally caused by chemical irritation from parts of the sebaceous gland secretion, including sweat.

Papules:
These are like small pink bumps on the skin, they are tender and should eventually clear up by itself over time.

Cysts:

These are like pustules and are also lesions filled with pus, that lie deep within the skin. Cysts are generally painful because of their inflammatory nature, and they result because of a burst comedos contents being infected itself over the surrounding skin area. Be careful by not bursting cysts as it can be very painful, and it will leave a deep scar for life.

Acne conglobata:
This rare type of acne develops on the back, bottom and thorax. It is an accumulation of pustules and cysts, and this may be due to a strong bacterial infection; which needs to be treated immediately by visiting a physician as soon as possible.

Non-inflammatory acne:

Closed comedo:

If a comedo stays underneath the skin surface, it can be called a closed comedo. They look like white bumps on the skin, and are commonly called whiteheads.

Open comedo:

If unlike a closed comedo, the comedo pushes towards the upper surface of the skin, it becomes an open comedo. This forms a black bump on the skin because of the accumulation of melanin pigment in that area, and are commonly called blackheads.

What has happened to our society? I am talking about the tans, folks. The truth is if you’re Caucasian, then you’re probably off tanning somewhere. What is the big deal with this? I swear, I’m going to be the only pale dude left on the planet. But you know what, I won’t have that leathery, age spot covered skin that many are now sporting. That’s just foul looking. Talk about premature aging. Whenever I see this, I immediately think of the flick ‘There’s Something About Mary.’

Yeah, if you’ve seen it, then you know what I’m referring to. Anyway, there are better alternatives now days. You don’t have to bake under the bright sun for hours each week or lie in one of those cancer ovens. Heck no! What about tan perfect solutions? Have you considered self-tanning? This is the way of the future, ladies and gents.

The concept of tan perfect is really not that new. You’ve surely encountered self-tanner at some point or another in your life. This stuff graces the shelves of every drug store these days. No, it actually crowds the shelves. Of course it all started with one company and their innovative idea. Then you had every single cosmetic brand on the market offering some sort of tan perfect variation cream. They just couldn’t come out with enough of these babies. Hey, believe it or not, they really couldn’t.

The demand for a good tan is still really high. More so, the demand for a great and safe tan is even higher. Everyone and their dog want a perfect full tan without any side-effects. So, they basically want to have their cake and eat it too. Now, is that such a big request? Most of us don’t think so. Heck, I don’t even tan, but I still think with all of our advancements we’d have some pretty awesome tan perfect solutions on the market by now. It is 2006 after all.

I can’t say that I know the absolute best tan perfect cream or self-tanning solution on the market today. However, I definitely can mention that I think it’s hilarious when individuals get these products on their clothes. That’s awesome! They strut around with their dark tan and some nice orange stain on their white T-shirt or new dress. Oh, come on, I know that makes you laugh too. Regardless, you can hop on the web at any time to check out tan perfect products and a number of other safe tanning solutions. Happy tanning everyone!

You can plan a family ski vacation even if no one knows how to ski. You can learn the sport while on vacation and have a great time. You do not need to know anything about skiing before you get to the resort because everything will be available to you there. All the knowledge you need and all the necessary equipment is part of a ski package. You will be skiing within an hour of beginning your instruction.

It is relatively easy to learn to ski. Most resorts provide a ski school right on their premises, with lessons being reasonably priced. There are both group and private lessons available at most resorts. You should schedule an appointment for lessons before you arrive at the resort, however. This way, yo will be sure that you can start your skiing lessons right away.

Most instructors begin by showing you how to handle your equipment. You will be tilted forward slightly when you are wearing ski boots, so walking in them the first time is quite awkward. You will get the hang of it in no time, though just walk with your knees bent slightly.

Your first skiing maneuver will be the plow, or snow plow. This technique requires that you literally use your skis like a plow. The back of the skis slowly moves outward and away from your body via the application of pressure. This is what stops you. You can guide yourself on skis by bending your knees and then leaning in one direction or another. The way you lean depends on which way you want to go. These techniques can be learned in about an hour, even if you have never skied in your life.

One of the great things about skiing is that once you have learned the snowplow technique and how to guide yourself, you are ready to hit the slopes. Get on the ski lift, go on up the mountain, and try out what you have learned. Once you feel confident enough to go faster, draw the skis back in from the snow plow position, then push them back out to control your speed.

Because you are just beginning to learn the sport, you should stay on trails designed for beginners. At most ski resorts the beginner trails are marked with a green emblem. Generally, trails marked in blue are for intermediate skiers. After a day on the beginner trails, you might be ready to try on of these. Black trails are for experts and can be very dangerous for individuals who do not have the skills to handle them. You should avoid black trails until you have had considerable amounts of instruction and experience. You will know when you are ready to use these trails!

One day, not long ago, I sat at the round table in front of the Yellow Rose, drinking a cold Iquitena with my good friend, Ryan, talking about the many beautiful orchids and epiphytes we have observed in the rainforest near Iquitos, Peru. Ryan nodded his head.

He glanced over his shoulder, leaned toward me, and said in a low voice, “My spies, which are wrong ninety percent of the time, tell me that a new species of orchid has been discovered near Moyobamba the size of a dinner plate.”

“Sounds more like the size of a pile of horse manure to me.”

“My spies work for INRENA.”

“I always wanted to go to Moyobamba.”

“They say the weather is perfect every day and every night.”

“I think I will go tomorrow.”

“You know about the Lacey Act?”

“How can I not know, you lecture me on it once a week!”

“I only want you to be careful and stay out of trouble. This orchid is unknown to science, it is unnamed. You can not touch it, hold it, move it, transport it, or export it. You understand?”

“I understand! I only want to look at it. Smell it’s scent, photograph it for posterity. That surely doesn’t violate the Lacey Act, does it?”

“Be careful, it’s intoxicating.”

I spent one day researching and packing. My best friend, Marmelita, and I left the next day for Tarapoto, a quiet, clean, farming community. We found an inexpensive hostel, two blocks from the central plaza, took a motokar to the market and made a meal out of fresh milk, whole grain corn bread, good cheese, fruits, and nuts from the local farms.

My Nikon D-70 camera malfunctioned and the man at the camera repair shop loaned us his digital Canon while he worked on mine. In the afternoon we hired a car to take us up to the High Cascade Waterfalls, a great place to swim and enjoy nature. In the evening we ate delicious, giant, fresh, aqua-farmed Malaysian shrimp and washed it down with a pitcher of mango juice. The next morning my camera was still in pieces so we decided to spend another day in Tarapoto.

Tarapoto is not a bad place for nature lovers. It was near here the English botanist and explorer, Richard Spruce, discovered and named the Platycerium Andinum, or Staghorn Fern. Spruce’s specimen died before getting back to England and it was not until 1969 that Lee Moore, the Adventurer, rediscovered the staghorn in the vicinity of Tarapoto and got a live specimen back to civilization.

I fondly remember growing two staghorn ferns in the shower of my bathroom in Indiana, in the 70s, doing my best to recreate the tropical rainforest environment. When I found my first magnificent specimen in the wild rainforest, I realized how pitiful my houseplants had been. This monster circled most of the tree, had fronds hanging down five feet or more, and the 35 shield fronds grew nearly two feet tall. If my house plants had reached their natural potential, there would not have been room for me to have taken a shower.

The next morning my camera still did not work. I purchased the used Canon 3.2 megapixel I had borrowed the day before. Compared to the Nikon at 5 megapixels, with the wonderful lens and all the buttons and functions that I know and love, this was a big loss. With no practice and the manual in Spanish, the odds of getting great photos were about the same as finding an orchid big as a plate.

Moyobamba is the Orchid City, with 2,500 species of orchids growing in the high jungle around the town. Marmelita and I hiked jungle trails, saw hundreds of species in full bloom, soaked in the hot springs, went to more waterfalls, and pursued tips to the nearby villages of Lamas and Rioja. We had a good adventure, accomplished most of what we set out to do, and learned a lot. We learned the truth is rarely heard, seldom seen, and difficult to photograph. The orchid is more the size of a saucer than a plate, but it is one of the most beautiful, rare, and valuable blossoms I have ever laid eyes on. Here is most of its story, woven together from several sources we interviewed in and around Moyobamba. Some of the locations and most of the juicy gossip I am keeping to myself.

A farmer named Faustino Medina set in motion an Indiana Jones style adventure by discovering a large group of pretty flowering plants. He dug some and sold them at a crossroad truck stop called El Progresso, for $1 apiece. An orchid collector from Virginia, like a typical gringo, paid $3.60 for three of them. He can be forgiven for not negotiating the price. He knew they could be worth $10,000 apiece and make him famous. I imagine him running down the road, looking over his shoulder, cradling his three treasures, but an important part of the story is he used Lee Moore’s taxi driver, Jose Mendoza. He did not have to run; Mendoza drove him directly to Moore, who confirmed, “You have the Holy Grail of Orchids.”

Wild orchids are protected by the international CITES treaty. This orchid was new to science and was unnamed. The catch is that only 23 experts in the world can name an orchid and none of them are in Peru. To gain possession of an unnamed, world-class orchid is hard. To get a legal permit to take the orchid to an official taxonomist is next to impossible. Legend has it that Lee Moore has smuggled most of the things that can be smuggled. His advice was to put it in a suitcase and go straight to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. They are affiliated with five taxonomists, the most of any botanical garden in the world. The collector walked through customs, worked up some papers, and realized his dream by having the lady slipper orchid named after him, Phragmipedium kovachii.

It is ok to build a road and destroy a million orchids. One gets a permit. It is not ok to take an orchid out of the country in a suitcase. That it has been done many times is not a defense, and it was not a defense this time. Federal agents confiscated the plant and charged and convicted the collector and the botanical garden of possession of an endangered species and illegal trade. They paid fines, served probation, and suffered loss of reputation.

At approximately the same time, the taxi driver, Jose Mendoza, raided Faustino Medina’s patch, taking every plant, and selling them on the black market to dealers in Ecuador and Lima. Lee Moore has the other two plants left by the collector, and has acquired 200 others that he is raising and propagating for the time when they are legal to export.

Faustino discovered another patch and seems to have sold several hundred for $4 apiece to a rogue with a pickup truck named Kenneth Reategui, who has a small recreational park and restaurant on the outskirts of Tarapoto. He fenced them to an orchid dealer in Lima for what is understood to be a small fortune. An article appeared in the Orchidist, about the last known site of P. kovachii. A thousand mature plants. It was considered to be a safe site because of its inaccessibility, requiring a “hike from hell.” Two weeks later a helicopter with cargo boxes swooped in and stole all but two plants too high up on the cliff to reach. Armed men who would not know an orchid from a cactus are fingering the hibiscus.

Intoxicating.

Anyone interested in having an adventure, photographing orchids, touring Tarapoto, Moyobamba and the surrounding countryside, swimming under waterfalls, and soaking in natural hot springs can contact me to arrange the details.

It is important when seeking a job in the cruise industry to do lots of research. The Internet is a great tool with lots of information available for the job hunter. You need to learn how to apply, what jobs are available, and what skills are needed for the jobs.

When doing your research, determine which job appeals to you. Don’t just send in an application for “any position available”. The cruise line will think that you are only doing this for fun and they probably won’t take your application seriously. Always remember that ideally cruise lines want serious, committed people who will hopefully stay around for a while. It costs good money to keep finding and training new hires that only stay for one contract. Okay, maybe in your eyes this job is only for a year or two whilst you save a bit of money, see the world and think about what you REALLY want to do with your life… and that’s fine. But don’t mention that to the cruise line!

Try to make sure that all your skills and experience are targeted and worded to meet the requirements of a specific job. For example, if you apply to one cruise line for a job as a Casino Slot Technician, then everything on your resume will be tailored to back this up and strengthen your case. If at the same time you also apply to a different cruise line for a job in the onboard Gift Shops, then you will adjust your resume by rearranging and rewording it slightly to now back this position up.

Some jobs require specialized experience or education, especially for positions such as aerobics instructors, photographers, and youth counselors. Others, including general cruise staff and retail positions, don’t. All, however, demand excellent customer service skills. Your best bet to break into this industry is to use the experience that you already have and market it to your advantage. But really you should be willing to accept any position that you qualify for. Once you’ve got a job on a cruise ship, you can always use your contacts to move into the areas you really desire.

Other jobs are often only available to those who have worked on cruise ships previously. For example, bar tender, purser, and tour staff are very popular jobs on board. Cruise ships like to reward employees who have demonstrated the skills needed to work with demanding passengers by filling these jobs from within the current list of outstanding crew members.

Therefore, just because you worked as a bar tender or a waiter ashore does not necessarily mean you will be able to easily secure one of these jobs on board. You may have to start out as a room steward (or stewardess) and work up to waiter, bar tender or office staff.

Jobs in the engine room or on deck are also sometimes difficult to obtain unless you are of the same nationality as the ship’s officers. When doing your research, determine what the nationality of the ship’s crew is. If your background doesn’t match, it will be difficult to get a job in the engine room or on deck. Most ship’s officers are Norwegian, Greek, or Italian, with a handful of British and American ships. In addition, many of the technical crew jobs in the engine room or on deck are staffed with Filipinos.

The cruise lines are very particular about the job application process. If your resume/CV or application package is inaccurate, incomplete, poorly written, or goes to the wrong person, you have wasted your time and money. Each different cruise line job may require a different contract or a different application process. Be sure to read carefully when applying.

Also, beware that there is a lot of incorrect and outdated cruise ship job information available for free and for sale. Don’t purchase anything without checking it out first. What motive does the website have for giving away free information? And do they continually update it? What’s more, the author of a book must be able to prove his or her credentials. It goes without saying that they must have actually WORKED onboard a cruise ship before and have some kind of track record in helping people get jobs on cruise ships. The information they are selling must also be accurate and up-to-date.

Since most cruises ships cater to Americans and other English-speaking travelers, it is important that you speak English. All cruise ship workers need a valid passport and if you’re not an American or Canadian citizen then you’ll also need a Seafarers visa. This visa is for seamen and allows you to work in United States’ ports for a limited number of hours/days.

In summary, finding a job on a cruise ship can require a lot of research and time to seek out the position and company that’s right for you. It also requires the applicant to properly complete the necessary paperwork and to have the correct work visas and passport. Cruise ship jobs can be hardwork. But I’ve always found that the benefits far outweigh the negatives. After all you do get PAID to see the world and get to meet and make friends with people of all different nationalities. Friendships that might last a lifetime!

Anyone with a fear of flying will dread going to airports. There are some practical things that you can do to help prepare yourself for this.

These are just a few tips to get you going. At the end of the article are some other ideas to help your fear of flying.

1. Get everything ready well before hand. Do not leave anything to the last minute. Check passport dates are in date. Let your airline Special Assistance department know that you are a nervous passenger so they can tell the crew onboard.

2. Get to the airport really really early as Security is so much tougher now. I would even suggest staying at a hotel the day before so you are nearby and don’t have to rush to the airport. When you get to the airport, you can choose whether to join the shouting, rushing frustrated family who don’t know where they are going or take your time.

By the way, someone once told me that worked for the British Airport Authorities that all their research into passenger behaviour proved that people don’t or can’t read airport signs. Passengers become sensory overloaded with all the neon suspended signs everywhere so they blank them out. In a state of panic, this becomes even worse. Like I say, you can join the mad masses or get their early, learn the layout, get a coffee and relax into the environment.

3. Wear comfortable clothes. Airports and aircraft are multi temperature zones. Where what can easily be added to or removed. Isn’t a shame that shell suits went out of fashion? Sorry UK joke.

4. Drink water and lots of it. Air conditioned environments drain you of moisture. When you are in the air, this increases the effects of alcohol by two or three times. The crew are told to drink two litres of water on a flight to counter this.

5. When onboard, move your legs around. Get up and walk around during the flight. When you are not moving around, fasten your seat belt. In Turbulence the aircraft is not bothered by it and you will be safe if you are strapped in.

6. Look out of the window so that you can keep your sense of perspective. Closing your eyes and clenching strips you of some of your primary human senses that help with balance.

Hope that helps you?

Other things that people we have helped with their fear of flying or claustrophobia is to work on the mental side too. For instance, there are many approaches out there that can help you.

For example, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy really helps with the thinking side of fear. A lot of people with fear of flying or other phobias often have unhelpful thinking patterns. Cogntive approaches give you some help and things to think about whilst you are queuing.

Other approaches that work for nervous passengers are Relaxation techniques so that you can practice visualising good things happening instead of disaster!!! We use this on our courses plus another technique which I am about to mention which is NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming.

This is a technique to help people to deal with the unhelpful thought patterns they are using.

Another technique I have come across which people have found very useful is TFT – Thought Field Therapy.

Good luck!

Are you planning to experience your honeymoon on an island where romance is in the air? Are you arranging a family reunion where you could spend quality time with your loved ones? Are you searching for an island to escape with your friends during the summer vacation?

Here’s a great way to spend your precious occasions. Try the Bahamas getaway and you’ll be able to experience the time of your life.

Everyone deserves a Bahamas getaway. And here’s the proof:

* Geographical: Bahamas is a country where there are 700 different islands. Plus, each of these islands has something unique to offer your island vacation. There are islands which would make you think you’re in Las Vegas with the bright lights and the line of casinos. There are islands with white sand that stretches to the southeast of the Florida coast. There are islands for the pleasure of the fisherman alone. There are islands with a club setting where you can enjoy golfing and relaxing by the pool. There are islands that could provide you with all your city needs – the shopping mall, night clubs, and restaurants. It is the third largest barrier reef in the world.

*Historical: For you to taste the culture of the Bahamians, you should attend the Junkanoo Festival. During the days when they were enslaved by the West Indies, the Bahamian slaves were given a day to celebrate. From there, the festival became a yearly event in honor of their freedom. This festival is a parade of at least a thousand locals dressed in colorful costumes dancing to the beat of the drums and whistles.

On the 65th year of their Queen Victoria’s reign, the slaves were forced to use axes to make a 102 feet staircase. This is the most visited attraction in the Bahamas is the Queen’s Staircase. With what the name says, you have to climb 65 limestone steps to reach Bennett’s hill.

There are many forts located at the Bahamas, but the Fort Charlotte is the most visited of all. The visitors are take interest in this fort because it is the largest in the country. It has dungeons and battle marks all around the fort, although it has been said that there was no shot fired in this fort.

Surely, history buffs would consider these islands as an ideal getaway.

* Environmental: The Bahamas is surrounded with pine trees and flourishing plantations. The country has limestone caves located in all of its 700 islands. There are fishing flats available to ensure the laws in fishing are abided. And lastly, the Bahamas ranks third in the world’s largest barrier reef. The Bahamas is a getaway for people who want to enjoy the nature surrounding the island.

* Cultural: Bahamians are people who handle their money by doing business. They are born nature-lovers. Because of this, many of the Bahamians contribute in making their country a place to for visitors to getaway.

The food in the Bahamas is simply irresistible. The famous foods in the Bahamas are seafood. Majority of the local restaurants in the cities serve boiled, baked stewed fish of all kinds. The Bahamian cuisine is a perfect getaway for people who love spicy foods and maintain a fish diet.

In 1942, when the sponge industry fell, the Bahamian women started designing dried palms in making baskets, dolls, and baskets. These became the most sought out souvenir visitors buy from the vendors.

* Adventure: You could choose with a number of sports provided in the island. These sports include fishing on the shoreline, kayaking on an environment full of fishes and birds, surfing through the undiscovered parts of the islands, beachcombing a large collection of seashells, snorkeling through the clear reefs, discovering the caves and ruins; and hiking through spectacular cliffs.

The Bahamas getaway is perfect for people who are celebrating their honeymoon. It is also an amazing place to mark their vows as a married couple. It could be also spent with friends and family who wish to experience an island getaway.

It’s easy to get into the Bahamas paradise. A U.S. citizen should just be able to provide a passport, their official birth certificate, a citizenship certificate, and their two-way ticket. After presenting this, you could now start and explore the wonders of the country and enjoy your Bahamas getaway.
